Pastor’s Corner

Dear Friends,
During the month of November, we remember the souls of those in purgatory. One can gain a plenary indulgence by visiting a cemetery each day between November 1 and November 8 and praying for the departed, even if the prayer is only mental. A partial indulgence is gained throughout the month of November. These indulgences are applicable to us and to the Souls in Purgatory. Purgatory, in accordance with Catholic teaching, is a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God‘s grace, are not entirely free from venial faults, or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions.

That temporal punishment is due to sin, even after the sin itself has been pardoned by God, is clearly the teaching of Scripture. All sins are not equal before God, therefore it is presumptuous for us to claim to know how God will assign a punishment. For unrepented venial faults, for the payment of temporal punishment due to sin at time of death, the Church has always taught the doctrine of purgatory.

Is this fair? I have come to believe that the Church is very fair and very reasonable in what it teaches. We innately teach these values to our children. I will give you an example. When I was a teenager, I began to play golf, and I accidentally hit a golf ball through a neighbor’s window. That neighbor, who was obviously upset and disappointed that I ran away rather than be honest and working out my problem, assigned me a task. This was to work off some of the damage to the window by helping him set up a fourth of July party. Sometimes, as I reflect on this interaction, it gives me a glimpse of God the Father’s love for us. Love is not necessarily letting anything slide. God, who loves us as we are is not willing to leave us where we are.

We need a deep purification and to be fully cleansed before we enter into heaven, which is why we pray for the souls in purgatory. It is a spiritual act of mercy, to pray for the dead. And during November, we can pray a rosary at a cemetery. When we do, we release a soul from purgatory, and we receive a plenary indulgence. To gain an indulgence, we receive communion, go to confession and pray for the Pope’s intentions.

I hope to see you at St. Stanislaus Cemetery during November. God Bless you and your families.

Peace,
Fr. David Aufiero
