Pastor’s Corner

Dear Friends,
Last Sunday, we saw in the Gospel message the difference between Martha and Mary. We saw Martha anxious and worried about many things, and then Mary simply sitting at the feet of Jesus. Mary chooses the better part according to Jesus.

At first glance, it would seem as if Martha does not get a fair shake. She could easily be dismissed as someone who is not fully engaged in God’s will. When you put on a dinner party, someone takes charge of the hospitality, which is equally as important as cooking a good meal. Our guests should feel welcomed. It is strange and off-putting to be invited to a dinner and no one talks to you.

A little deeper than this, is our view of the spiritual life. Martha can represent the anxieties we face in the world. There are necessary things that we think about that should be set aside for our time spent in prayer. Mary represents the actual letting go of these things to sit at Jesus’s feet. It is important to do this from time to time—to let go, to sit at Jesus’s feet and learn from Him about His will in our lives. We most effectively do this in the silence of our hearts, when we let go of our daily struggles for a time spent in silence. After this time in silence is spent, we go out and get the job done.

Peace to you and your families.
Sincerely Yours,

Fr. David Aufiero
