Pastor’s Corner

+JMJ+
Dear Friends,
Last week I spoke about Halloween and how to properly celebrate this now-commercialized holiday. I mentioned a few things in particular to avoid - ouija board, tarot cards, palm reading, dressing up like devils, evil spirits and so on. Why? Halloween is not the time to glorify evil. There is enough evil in our world and so this is not the time to make it seem glamorous. This is what the devil would like us to do... make it seem like evil is not real, that he is only imaginary. I can tell you from first hand experience that the devil is real, evil is real, and there is such a thing as hell.

Now, this is not to cause a scare, and again, it is never right to glorify evil ... we are, as Catholics, called upon to honor the dead, to show respect and reverence for our loved ones who have passed on to the Kingdom. We are to pray for them and offer Masses for their souls so that God may, in His mercy, welcome them into His Kingdom - the eternal Kingdom of Heaven.

It is also a time for us to reflect upon our own mortality. This is why we show due respect for the dead, especially the saints who have won the crown of everlasting life. We recognize that one day we too will come face to face with our God, our loving God who is also a just judge. We look to the champions and heroes of the Catholic faith as inspiration on how to live our lives in this world so as to enter into the joy of eternal life. For God makes us that promise, He prepares His "rooms" for His faithful. And we must be among those faithful in order to receive that which is promised. The saints are those who lived their lives for God, for His Kingdom. This is how they are remembered.

As we contemplate our own mortality, when the time comes for us to face the "just judge" - how do we want to be remembered? I think it is something to seriously contemplate ... Do we want to be remembered as a person who was indifferent to the eternal world - that of hell or heaven - as someone who made light of evil and spiritual darkness? Or would we rather be remembered as a person of great faith? As a person who devoted life to God, as someone who showed others who God is and how He loves? As we honor our beloved dead this month and pray that they be received into the merciful arms of our God, let us always strive to live our lives in accordance with His light and love so that we too may experience His eternal mercy.
God Bless you!
