Of course, we are all sad that our Choir Director Jamie has decided to leave us and begin a new chapter in his life. His talent over the last 25 years has enabled us to sing beautifully for God. First, as I said this past weekend, I am grateful for him and for his God-given gift of music. Jamie is a very talented musician.

This does, however, lend the opportunity to speak about sacred music and the purpose of music within the context of worship. Sacred music is considered more holy when it adds delight to prayer, fosters unity among the faithful, and adds depth, reverence and solemnity to worship, namely in the context of the Mass. As such, there is an inestimable value to sacred music. It is a treasure deeply rooted in the Church's tradition because its function is directed toward the glory of God. Among the primary desirable forms of sacred music is Gregorian chant - founded in Western and Central Europe around the 9th-10th century, attributed to Pope Gregory I. It is a composition of both Latin and Greek with the use of the pipe organ as the primary and preferred instrument for sacred music. We are not unfamiliar with Gregorian chant since we sing the Gloria, Sanctus, Post-Consecration, and Agnus Dei all in Latin. The point here being that sacred music, in its proper form, is directed to the glory of God. It is meant to foster a deeper depth and reverence to our worship.

Now, I mention all this for two main reasons. First it is a good reminder of the nature and purpose of sacred music. Second, with Jamie leaving the parish, changes will inevitably have to be made in our music program. The exact nature of change is uncertain at the moment. It will depend on the person who is hired and we will take it from there. I know that over time we can grow accustomed to one way of doing things, sacred music being just one example. This however, lends us an opportunity to grow, to be challenged and perhaps learn something new. Please be open to whatever new things may come our way in the coming weeks ahead.

With that, I want to offer one more word of thanks to Jamie for his 25 years here - beginning at St. Stanislaus and now Holy Family. He will be missed.
