Pastor’s Corner

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
This week, I would like to bring into focus the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary. On October 7, 1571, there was the Battle of Lepanto. Every Catholic should know this date. It changed the course of history, if it was not for Our Lady’s intervention.

The Muslims wanted to sack Europe with the goal to put a Crescent on St. Peter’s Basilica. A coalition of Nations were assembled by Pope Pius V to defend itself but only Spain and Italy came forward. Only a small Navy that was put together to defend Europe. Pope Pius V did not give up or get discouraged. He fell on his knees and turned to God. He asked all of Europe to turn to Mary and entrust this impossible task to Mary in the Rosary. Eucharistic Adoration and the Rosary together is a very powerful means to come together and pray for all of our needs. All of the Catholic Churches were to remain open so people could come in and pray. On the eve on the battle, they prayed the rosary together and many went to confession.

The Holy league met to go to the Battle of Lepanto. The Christian ships were assembled in a Cross vs the Muslims which were assembled in a Crescent. The Christians believed that Mary intervened. The wind at first was against the Christian ships but the wind changed directions and they charged the Muslim troops with full force and in the end, the Christians won. Pope Pius V did not know yet. He was in a meeting and he stood up and looked out the window. When he found out, he made haste and thanked God. It was believed he had a vision. Bells began in Rome. They came out and hugged each other and thanked our Lady. Pope Pius V declared October 7, the feast day of Our Lady of Victory then it changed to Our Lady of the Rosary.

This story is pretty awesome… wow! When we face situations that we think are impossible, we should entrust these things to God and put them in Mary’s hands. Especially in the rosary, we find great encouragement.

This month, as Catholics, we are encouraged to turn to our Lady in all we do. We can do so by praying the rosary. Come to our Candle lit rosary on Monday October 17 at 6:30pm.

God bless you and your families.
Sincerely Yours,

Fr. David Aufiero
Pastor
