Pastor’s Corner

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Last week I was on my Canonical retreat at the Most Holy Trinity Monastery in Petersham MA. It is a nice little location on the far side of the Quabbin Reservoir. As priests, every year, we are required to make a retreat as required through Canon Law. The law is interpreted through Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium of the Church. Sometimes when we think of the law of the Church, we have a tendency to think, oh no, this could be totally strict, and react by resisting it. But the truth is, the law is beautiful. It is good for us on every level to try our best to follow God’s law, as is particular to each of our vocations. Following God’s law is a privilege.

This privilege is extended to the retreat. Every morning, the monks in Petersham would rise early and greet the day with prayer, they have chores and work to perform around the monastery. Each of them has a unique story that has brought them to their vocation. In an interview by Cardinal Robert Sarah, he speaks about if we want a renewal of the priesthood, we should take a look at monasteries. ( I am paraphrasing here, his exact quote is much more eloquent.) As I entered into the rhythm of the day, the day is guided so much by prayer. I think to myself, how important it is for not only the priest but all of us in our respective vocations, to put God first in everything we do, and work as each is called. We do the work and leave the results to God. Our routines say a lot of what we find important, it is always a helpful reminder to place God at the center.

Blessings to you this week!
Sincerely Yours,

Fr. David Aufiero
