Pastor’s Corner

Dear Friends,
The third thing St. Joseph teaches us is the dignity of work. He served his family through his work as a carpenter. It was an expression of love for God and his family. Presumably, this would have been the work of his father and the work he passed on to Jesus. Hence, he taught even the Son of God of the dignity of work.

Whatever our work may be … teacher, doctor, secretary, painter, contractor, etc … must be an expression of love and done for the good of the family – to confer goodness on others. Work gives us a sense of purpose and accomplishment. We can also find joy in our work especially when we use our gifts and talents for the glory of God and the betterment of others. Is this not what we do in family life – work for the betterment of others? Even ordinary household tasks have dignity for the good of the family. By teaching Jesus a trade, St. Joseph taught Him responsibility, how to care and provide for the family through the work of His hands.

When we begin to understand the Holy Family, we begin to understand the gospel – the good news. The life of Jesus, Mary and Joseph show us that family life teaches us the basics of faith, trust, and how to listen to God. The Holy Family teaches us how to serve one another, of humility and love – how to put love into practice and hence how to be able to manifest the love of God in our lives. Rightly, in his historic visit to the Holy Land, Pope St. Paul VI called Nazareth a “school” uniting our weak human nature to the grace of God even in the midst of the most ordinary – the simple life of a family. Leading the way is St. Joseph.
