Pastor’s Corner

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Sunday marks a very patriotic day in the history of our country. I would call it patriotic because for the first time, back in September 11, 2001, while we were under attack, we as a people made a choice to come together. Where were you on this fate- filled day? I was a senior in Malden Catholic High School, an all-boys Catholic school and it was announced that the first plane hit the World Trade Center at 8:14am. At first, I was convinced this was an honest mistake. At 9:03am, all of America realized this we were under attack. And so many things happen from time to time and we realize that we can not live in fear, we choose to live and celebrate the freedom won for us by our veterans and we give thanks for the law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to protect us. While we should not live in fear, we should be vigilant. Even Christ himself warns us, in Mathew 24: 42, “always be ready, because you don’t know the day your Lord will come.”

With this said, we give thanks to the Law Enforcement and Fire Chiefs right here in South Deerfield. In particular, I am thankful to meet Sergeant Brian Ravish of the South Deerfield Police Department. Sergeant Ravish, came to our parish on Tuesday August 23 at 10am in the morning to give us active shooter training. Sergeant Ravish was very gracious to our parishioners as he responded to their questions and summarized strategies in safety. Also, thank you Deacon Rod for organizing this event. As we remember that fateful day, we are reminded of the importance to STAY AWAKE.

HERE ARE THE THREE TAKEAWAYS TO RESPOND TO AN ACTIVE SHOOTER
  1. Implement Greeters - Greeters who are active in saying hello to folks show the perpetrator that they will be confronted and will be accounted for and will be less likely to cause a scene in the community.
  2. Create a distraction - God forbid, if someone was to come in as an active shooter, you can create a distraction by throwing your missals at them. Also, a fire extinguisher is a valuable asset in creating a distraction.
  3. CALL 911 - Sometimes we can never overstate the obvious. The Police should arrive within 5 minutes at your location.
I hope this finds you and your family well. Take a moment to give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy in this country. May we strive to be a peaceful and welcoming community, and through working together may no one disturb our peace, freedom and right to worship.

God bless you all.
Sincerely Yours,

Fr. David Aufiero
