Pastor’s Corner

Dear Friends,
The word faith appears several times in this week’s reading. Faith is a supernatural gift given to us by God through the sacrament of baptism. It allows us to open our hearts and minds to God, and through faith as described in the second reading in Hebrews is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.

Of course, we have to pause and ask ourselves how do we know something. Faith is not the complete divorce from our reason. The Church has always stood firm in its belief that there is a relationship between faith and reason. Knowledge starts in the senses. We have five senses, our eyesight, hearing, smell, taste and touch, and this provides us with an ability to memorize and learn something. God is perceived so far above our senses.

When perceiving the Eucharist, we see something that looks like bread and it once was, but what it truly becomes is the Body, Blood Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ during Mass. Our senses cannot fully grasp this concept, but faith serves to compensate. Faith elevates our reason to the wonderful promises brought to us by God.

Prayer, spiritual reading, and the sacramental life of the Church help nourish our faith. The summer months are a good time to boost our prayer lives. I hope this message finds you and your families well.
Sincerely Yours,

Fr. David Aufiero
