Pastor’s Corner

+JMJ+
Dear Friends,
The word 'mediocre' is defined as 'moderate quality, not very good.' It derives from 2 Latin words: 'medius' - 'middle' and 'ocris' - 'rugged mountain', giving it the meaning, from the Latin: 'of middle height or degree.' It is like saying: "this is far enough, I'm ok here, I have done enough."

This past week, our Parish Mission speaker, Greg Wasinski, spoke a lot about giving more of oneself to God, in faith, in trust, in love. He explained during his 3-day mission, that what drives our faith, what motivates us, is simply how much we give from our hearts - our sincerity. It is that feeling of not being satisfied with the "status quo", that I want more and need more from God, that I want to do more for Him. But that begins by not settling for halfway up the mountain.

So, at this point in Lent, I have written and spoken about the 3 disciplines of the season - prayer, fasting and almsgiving. What has been your approach to these disciplines? How have you engaged the season with your own sacrifices, penances, prayer, and gift of self to others? Where is your heart in all this? The point here being that if we settle for mediocrity even during this season, that will just carry over through Easter - nothing changes. However, if our hearts have a real desire, a genuine yearning for God - then that makes all the difference. It moves us from mediocrity to exceptional, from status quo to excellence. We cannot help but be changed by the grace of God when we give Him just a little more of ourselves, our time, and our attention.
God bless you,
Fr. Jon

Reflection on the Mass:

Why are statues and crosses veiled the last 2 weeks of Lent?
The practice of covering crosses and statues perhaps goes back to 9th century Germany. It is a visual reminder of the darkness of Christ's passion, to heighten our senses and awareness for the Resurrection to come. In Germany the cloths were known as "hunger cloths" as a way to signify our longing for Christ to accomplish His mission of salvation. Folks can even cover statues and crosses at home during this time.
