Pastor’s Corner

+JMJ+
Dear Friends,
A parishioner was asking me recently about the change in the location of the confessional. It dawned on me that I'm not sure if I ever really explained the reason for the move. It is actually rather sad to have to think in such a way but the move was in order to protect myself, or any other priest hearing confessions, as well as the penitent - the one confessing. In the "old" confessional, there was only one way in and one way out. Should any person decide to accuse a priest of anything there was no way of being able to exit freely. In other words, the priest was trapped.

Furthermore, the door to the "old" confessional has a window where you can see the penitent but not the priest. Again, leaving him trapped. The new confessional has a private door for the priest with a window so that anyone can look in and see the priest sitting there. The 2 sides of the confessional have curtains to shield the identity of the penitent. Thus making the confessional more private but safer for both the penitent and the priest. And don't worry, the new confessional is equipped with sound-proof material as well as noise-maker in order to muffle sounds so that no one can hear anything out in the church. A huge thank you is owed to Stash Stokarski for the construction of the new confessional as well as a few members of the Knights of the Columbus for helping install it in its current location. The "old" confessional is now open for families to use during Mass for whatever "family needs" they may have. There is a speaker in there as well so that you can still follow along with the Mass.

I hope this adequately explains the reason for the change in the location of the confessional... Now that you know where to find it and why it is there ... it may be the right time to make a visit. Let's not forget that confession is not just an "add-on" to our faith like a buffet. Confession is necessary, it is a gift. We all have mistakes and sins for which we need to take responsibility. We all need God's help in various areas of our lives. Confession is a way of asking for that help and to cure what ails our souls.

Don't miss your opportunity to "get right with the Lord" this Sunday (April 10th) for our Lenten Penance Service. Several priests will be available in the church from 2pm-3pm for you to go to confession before Easter.

Let God's mercy be upon us all!!

God bless you,
Fr. Jon
