Vicar’s Corner

+JMJ+
Dear Friends,
"I believe in science" is the line I keep hearing on the news and on social media. Presumably it is the science of the fact that coronavirus is real. It is the science of the fact that wearing a mask helps protect oneself and others from spreading germs. Furthermore, it is the science that the vaccine, and now booster, helps also to protect oneself from the virus. I will say this, I believe in this science not because someone on the news told me I should but because of trustworthy sources and common sense.

Nevertheless, I believe in another dimension of science. I believe that life begins at the moment of conception. I believe that a baby, growing inside his or her mother's womb, can feel pain. I believe that the baby's major systems begin to develop as early as the 5th week of pregnancy and that during that time the brain begins to form. I believe that by week 6-7 the fetus begins to take human form - arms, hands, and legs. These are just some of the facts regarding the development of human life in the womb. I believe this because this is science and science is real.

You see, the point that I am trying to make here, as in the other articles over the last few weeks, is that we need to back away from the conflicting and biased narrative of secular culture. The narrative of the world leans on science when it is convenient, when it aligns with secular ideologies and backs away from reality when it does not. It is confusing and divisive.

As a people of faith we also must be a people of life. Does this mean that we need/ought to do more for our children - especially those who have no one to care for them? Yes. Does it mean we ought to support families in need? Yes. Nevertheless, we must not forget that we all had the same beginning. We need to start by recognizing the very real and simple fact that life begins at the moment of conception. Science proves this for us.
God bless you,
Fr. Jon
