Vicar’s Corner

Dear Friends,
Happy New Year!!

For some time now, the term "woke" has been circulating in our modern language and culture. It means that a person is 'alert to injustice in society, especially racism.' In spite of this strict definition and its claims to equality, the woke ideology is the rule by a very small number of people who have the superior knowledge, intelligence, and virtue needed to define which opinions are correct and which are just wrong. Inequality is the number one evil among the 'woke' population and this defines that which is good vs. evil. It is often aggressive and intolerant, not based on logic and very often little to do with improving people's lives. It is an utterly self-righteous ideology and we, as Catholics, ought to be very skeptical of this and its application in our society. This is not really about moral issues and concerns in regards to inequality and racism, rather the woke ideology is more about control. It is about erasing history, destroying historical institutions - such as the Church - in order to further advance this agenda. This is about advancing the secular and stamping out religion. History has already seen and experienced this type of phenomena - remember communism? The ideologies of Karl Marx seem to be re-emerging in our own time.

How does a Catholic respond to the 'woke' culture? Let's remember that Catholicism - Christianity - is not an ideology, it is relational. The invisible God made Himself known, seen, and heard in the Person of Jesus Christ. We meet Him, we encounter Him in and through the Sacraments of the Church - in particular the Holy Eucharist - as well through our prayers, devotions, and acts of charity. We meet Him in others, who come from all walks of life, who live in various conditions, are of different races and gender ... In such a way, we are able to actually help others, lead them to an encounter with God and perhaps even influence our own view of the world. Christianity is a religion of being ... it is a message of freedom, hope and meaning in people's lives. It is real because it opens our hearts and minds to that which is absolutely right, true and good ... it accounts for human sin and offers a means of redemption and forgiveness.

Friends, this is no time to be mediocre, it is not the time to give in to those who think they know better - who would like to back us into a corner and force-feed us the new "religion" of our time. Now is the time to awaken to faith... to be vigilant for the things of God and be a light for others to see the Truth, Goodness and Beauty of our God that comes not through ideologies that make no sense but rather through love - of God and neighbor.
God bless you,
Fr. Jon
