Vicar’s Corner

+JMJ+
Dear Friends,
The scapular is a great Catholic sacramental which has fallen by the wayside in its use, but God still holds out graces for those who seek His protection and presence with this special devotion. The scapular comes from the Latin term for the should bones on your back. It consists of a couple square cloths connected by a cord and is worn around the neck. Its origins are from a monk’s habit and was originally much larger; some scapulars are still attached to specific orders. However, the laity over time wanted to also be enrolled in the scapular, so its size was reduced for more people to wear it day and night under their normal clothing.

There are many promises associated with scapulars but they all involve the special protection of God, His Blessed Mother, and the saints for those who wear them. There are multiple indulgences and graces attached to the wearing of any scapular. Wearing one can also be a reminder to the person to pray at different times during the day, whenever they might feel it on them.

The blessing of scapulars is unique in the Church since the blessing actually follows the person when they are enrolled, meaning that if they break the scapular, the broken one is no longer blessed, but the next scapular they put on will be (this also makes it easier for the priest when accidents happen!).

There has been some buzz about scapulars here at Holy Family and so I ask you to contact me and stay tuned for more information about when we will host a big enrollment for anyone who is interested. My office number is 413-350-5975 and my email address is f.furman@diospringfield.org.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Frank
