Vicar’s Corner

Dear Friends,
Lent will soon be upon us and so we can hit the ground running, I’d like to offer some spiritual pro tips to make sure you get your journey to Easter started on the right foot. Something that always comes up in conversation is what you’re giving up for Lent. My advice to you is to make sure your sacrifice is S.M.A.R.T.

Specific: don’t choose something so generic that you really don’t know whether or not you’ve made any progress i.e. “I’m going to be holier this Lent” doesn’t describe what it is you are doing.

Measurable: you should be able to quantify what you are doing. “I’m going to pray the rosary more” is hard to measure if you only pray it now and then as is. “I’m going to pray the rosary everyday during Lent” is a much better goal and you know when you are slacking.

Attainable: If you have a job that requires you to work 12 hours each day, from 6am-6pm, then you should not choose a goal you cannot fulfill, like going to morning Mass every day. Make sure you can actually reach your goal – which is different from it being difficult.

Relatable: your goal should involve something that interests you. If you find praying the rosary difficult and hard to focus on, how about doing some extra reading about the saints instead?

Timely: know how long you will make your sacrifice for and what days you will be making it.

I also recommend one positive and one negative sacrifice in Lent: a positive is adding something (like prayer) and a negative is subtracting something (like candy).
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Frank
