Vicar’s Corner

Year of the Eucharist

+JMJ+
Dear Friends,
Some of you may have heard the buzz, that our diocese, the Diocese of Springfield, will be hosting its very own “Year of the Eucharist” from November 21, 2021 until October 7, 2022. This is a big undertaking for our diocese, but it is one that is necessary for helping us to believe that Jesus, body and blood, soul and divinity, is truly the Holy Eucharist. Jesus never said He would feed us with a symbol but that He would feed us with His body.
Over the course of next year, there will be many opportunities for, really, everyone to get involved and to deepen their faith. We will be starting the year at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Springfield on November 21st with a Eucharistic Procession after their 4pm Mass. From there the rest of the year begins! Many parishes will be holding 40 Hours Devotions (40 straight hours of Adoration) in a parish near you throughout the year. We have small groups coming together around the diocese to delve deeper into the mysteries of our faith by studying the Biblical roots of the Mass. If you are a young adult between the ages of 22 and 40, you can join in the discussion with others around your age by visiting the website for Springfield’s Office of Young Adult Ministry. There will be plenty of witness videos, learning resources, and up-to-date information about all events available on the official website.
God Bless you!
Fr. Jon

South County Senior Center: As most of you know already, the South County Senior Center is in grave disrepair. Operating under a tent for the summer and into the fall, the Town of Deerfield was in need of a warm place as the colder weather was approaching. In an agreement between the Town of Deerfield, the Diocese of Springfield and myself, we were able to allow the seniors to use our parish center, during the month of November, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30am-12:30pm. The Town is compensating for the use of the hall. Personally, I think this is a wonderful thing we can do for our town and for our seniors.
Thanksgiving Day Mass will be on Thursday November 25th at 9am
Vocations Preaching Mission: Thank you all for your patience while Fr. Frank and I - along with several other priests - travel to the different parishes of our diocese in an effort to preach on vocations to the priesthood. In October I visited Holy Name in Springfield and Fr. Frank visited St. Joseph's in Shelburne Falls. Last weekend I was at St. Mary's in Lee - where I lived right after I was ordained a priest! Our efforts have been good and we have been well received... yet, we still need your prayers!! Again, thank you!!
St. Cecilia's Choir: New voices are needed! No talent necessary! Our choir is looking for new members. If you are interested in singing with the choir at the 10:30 am Mass or becoming a cantor at the other Masses, please contact our organist Maren Carlsen: m.carlsen1@gmail.com.
Traveling Chalice: The traveling chalice ministry is a great way to engage in actively praying for more religious vocations, especially to the priesthood. Volunteers are needed to welcome the chalice into your home and pray each day for vocations. Please contact Fr. Jon for more information. Sign ups are at the doors of the church.
Pope St. John Paul II Parish Center: With the arrival of the seniors, our parish center is getting a lot more use than in years past. This is a wonderful thing! Our beautiful space is available! If you would like to book an event, please call the office.
