Vicar’s Corner

+JMJ+
Dear Friends,

Back in October I had the opportunity to travel to Franciscan University of Steubenville - my alma mater - for a vocations event. I had not been back to campus in several years, so it was a treat to be able to go. While there, I was able to spend some time in the main chapel on campus - Christ the King.

A few things had changed since the last time I was there. The tabernacle was moved to the center of the sanctuary and a shrine was erected in honor of the Blessed Mother. A few things had not changed - the line for confession was out the door, the chapel was jam packed for the 12pm noon Mass, the music was upbeat and the atmosphere was vibrant - alive. It reminded me of my time there ... a time of growing in my relationship with God, of maturing in faith and in my friendships. I must admit, and this will come as no surprise, but I was more focused on my social life than on my school work!

Now, I mention all this because it was a time when my life was much simpler. I did not have all the responsibilities that I do now, life was not as overwhelming and stressful - it was simple. I remember how I was much more disciplined in the ways of fasting and prayer. I spent countless hours in adoration, I used to walk the campus and pray the rosary ... When I returned to campus a few months ago, the feeling of how joyful those times were - they were simple yet profound ... I believe the Lord was preparing me for a deeper and more mature faith. It was a time when He was helping build my character and strengthen my soul.

This is precisely why it is so important to enter into these special liturgical seasons. The Church gives us plenty of opportunity for growth in faith. So often we complicate things because we feel too pulled in various directions, we overthink things, hurt feelings, say the wrong thing, and so on... Faith is not meant to be so complicated - as I learned and continue to learn. Faith is simple because God is simple ... A simple, yet disciplined faith is one that prepares us and strengthens us to receive the Lord with greater intensity, with greater fervor ... with greater love.

During this Advent Season, let's try not to get too distracted, but rather engage in those disciplines that will help bring about a profound encounter with our loving Savior - prayer, Mass, confession, devotions. Don't try to overthink it, just engage—keep it simple and let the Lord enter your heart!
God bless you,
Fr. Jon
