Purgatory

+JMJ+
Dear Friends,
Being the month of November which the Church devotes most especially to praying for the dead, let us take a look at what purgatory is and what it means for us. To define purgatory, let us look to the Catechism of the Catholic Church #1030-31: All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.

Remember that the Church has three parts: the Church militant (that would be us, those who are still alive and striving to prepare ourselves for heaven), the Church victorious (those angels and saints in heaven who already enjoy their reward), and the Church suffering (those souls in purgatory who cannot help themselves but must be cleansed of their earthly attachments so their wills might be completely free to love God and be aligned with His). Purgatory is for those who die and either have small sins on their consciences or still have an attachment to sin, even after having Confessed them, for the Sacrament of Confession only gets rid of the guilt of sin.

November is a great month to pray for your beloved dead. Normally, there is a special indulgence attached to visiting a cemetery any day between November 1-8th. However this year, the Vatican has increased the time you can receive this plenary indulgence to the entirety of November. You may only receive one plenary indulgence per day and it must be applied to the dead if you do this particular one in November. To get the indulgence, you must visit a cemetery and pray for the dead there, pray for the Pope’s intentions, pray a Creed, go to Confession within a fortnight (two weeks), go to Mass and receive Holy Communion with the intention of getting the indulgence, and be free from attachment to all venial and mortal sin. This means if you do all of these things every day during November, you can release up to 30 souls into heaven this year! If you don’t fulfill all those requirements, you will still receive a partial indulgence for what you could do. So get out there this month and pray!
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Frank Furman
