Pastor’s Corner

+JMJ+
Dear Friends,
"The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest" (MT 9:37-38; Luke 10:2).

The words of Jesus here reflect the ministry of the disciples. They are to go out, as laborers to gather people - the harvest - for the Kingdom of God. These words also reflect the ministry of priests. This is the task of the clergy, to go out into the world and proclaim the Good News, the Gospel, to all people, to gather people into the Church - which is essentially calling them to the Kingdom. Yet, this is no easy task and in our day, in our diocese, there are so few laborers. No truer words could be spoken in today's world - "the harvest is abundant but the laborers are few..." Not to mention, as St. Luke goes to note in chapter 10 Jesus says to the disciples: "I am sending you like lambs among wolves." Again, so true in our culture today. We are up against a society that is becoming - or even has become - increasingly more anti-religion. In the secular world, there seems to be no place for God. Politics and government oversight has become the religion of our day. With this mind, Jesus' words hit home - "the harvest is abundant but the laborers are few..."

So, what are we to do? How are we to change the narrative? Jesus gives us simple instructions: "ask the master of his harvest to send out laborers..." We are to do one thing: pray. As a parish, a diocese and a whole Church we are invited to beg the Lord to send us good and holy men to carry on His mission. We are to help rebuild a culture that inspires young people to foster a relationship with God - one that helps them hear His voice. The fact that we have so few young people in our parishes does not mean that God stops calling men to the priesthood. No, it means we have to help them hear His voice.

Friends, this is what the "Traveling Chalice" is all about. It is a way for the families of our parish to "ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers..." Each month a chalice that is used for Mass is kept in someone's home and each day the family prays together - morning or evening - for vocations. It is just one small way that we can do our part in asking our Lord for more priests. The next generation of priests are out there and we need to do our part in helping them hear His voice and follow His call.

There is a sign-up sheet in church for this beautiful ministry. If you'd like more information, please call or email Fr. Jon.
God Bless you!
