Pastor’s Corner

+JMJ+
Dear Friends,

This week we have another guest columnist... from our new Music Director:
I am Sarah Dzialo, your new Music Director, and I am delighted to be here! I am one of four siblings who grew up in New York City and now lives on the family farm of my cellist/beekeeper husband Peter. I recently finished a Master’s in Religion & Music through Yale’s Institute of Sacred Music, and together here at Holy Family, we will be singing sacred music that aligns with the mind of the Church.

The Second Vatican Council’s document “Musicam Sacram” (“Sacred Music”) defines sacred music as “Gregorian chant, sacred polyphony in its various forms both ancient and modern, sacred music for the organ and other approved instruments, and sacred popular music, be it liturgical or simply religious.” Perhaps the best example of this “sacred popular music” is the treasure of English hymnody from which we English-speaking Catholics draw, such as for the beginning and end of Mass.

We will learn more about sacred music together as the months go on. God bless you all, and I hope to meet and speak with many of you after Sunday Masses!

Parish News

Fr. Furman's next presentation will be: “Salvation Outside the Church… and Aliens.” This will be at 6:30pm on July 15th in the parish hall. The aim of this talk is to straighten out what we mean when we say there is no salvation outside the Church since many historically have equated this to meaning that everyone must be baptized with water. St. Thomas Aquinas will weigh in and we will use the topic of extraterrestrial aliens to better understand what it means.
