Pastor’s Corner

Dear Friends,
The Diocese of Springfield has issued some new COVID guidelines that I would like to speak about here. For a complete list of the guidelines follow this link: http://diospringfield.org/directives-for-confronting-the-coronavirus/. In light of these new directives, I want to highlight those that have an effect on our parish community.
  • Masks are still required and please use the hand sanitizer stations at the entrances of the church. Sanitization of the church after Mass is still in place.
  • Seating capacity: We are now able to increase our capacity to 50% while doing our best to maintain 6 feet social distance seating for individuals. Families may still sit together. I understand in our small church that it is difficult to socially distance sit from one another. Let's do our best to not make people feel uncomfortable. At the same time, as long masks are worn, I am ok with folks sitting next to each other in close proximity. If you are not comfortable sitting close to another person, please let the usher know that. You also may stand in the back.
  • Eucharist Ministers are permitted; however, given the new protocol for Holy Communion, MInisters will not be needed at this time. Please also remember to maintain social distance in the Communion line.
  • Sign of Peace: The Rite of Peace is allowed per a simple wave. However, please note that the sign of peace is not obligatory. It is an option within the Mass. Given the fact that many folks are still uncomfortable exchanging peace and that a "simple wave" can get out of hand or become irreverent, at this time we will not reintroduce this practice.
  • Choir: Members of the choir may return to singing while maintaining social distancing in the choir loft. Members of the choir who wish to return, please see Fr. Jon.
  • In-person, indoor, parish related meetings may be held. We are permitted to have 100 persons per meeting while maintaining social distance and the wearing of masks. Outdoor events are allowed to have 150 people at a time, while wearing masks if not able to social distance. No food or drink may be served at either indoor or outdoor meetings. Parish fundraising events may be held as well while following these guidelines. This means that our parish groups may have their monthly meetings and we are in the early stages of planning for Summerfest - to be held in August.
  • Communion to the Homebound may resume with ministers and homebound parishioners who feel comfortable meeting. Masks must be worn.
  • The dispensation for the Sunday obligation remains in place. Nevertheless, one who is able to get to Mass ought NOT to miss unless for a very good reason. Those who are ill, the elderly, and homebound are still able to watch Mass on TV. We will not be providing live-stream Masses from this point forward. You may tune into Chalice of Salvation on Sunday mornings at 10am on WWLP, channel 22.
Keep in mind that just because the directive gives permission does not mean that we are obliged to follow, especially if something is optional within the context of Mass, for example the sign of peace. Though, some of these directives offer a bit of hope that things are beginning to loosen up a bit. Albeit, not by much but it is something. I think, in the grand scheme of things, we ought to just be thankful that we can meet in person, pray together, and worship together. Remember: Faith over fear!
