Pastor’s Corner

Dear Friends,
As we celebrate Memorial Day Weekend, I would like to draw our attention to our freedoms we enjoy in this country. Freedom should not be taken for granted. Thank you to our war veterans for your service! Our Catholic faith becomes a leaven when lived well in society. Expressing our faith in the public square falls under the themes outlined in Catholic Social Teaching, which is summarized on the USCCB Website. Below is a summary of these themes.

The Sacredness of Human Life: The Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society.

Call to Family, Community and Participation: The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our society -- in economics and politics, in law and policy -- directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriage and the family are the central social institutions that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined.

Rights and responsibilities: The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met. Therefore, every person has a fundamental right to life and a right to those things required for human decency.

Care for the poor: This instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first.
The Dignity of work/ Rights of workers: If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected--the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to the organization and joining of unions, to private property, and to economic initiative.

Solidarity: The Gospel calls us to be peacemakers. Our love for all our brothers and sisters demands that we promote peace in a world surrounded by violence and conflict.

Care for God’s Creation: We show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation.

These seven themes outline the teaching of Catholic Social teaching. Memorial Day weekend falls on the same day we celebrate Pentecost. The Gift of the Holy Spirit helps us to bring our faith to the public square. Blessings to you and your families.
Sincerely Yours,

Fr. David Aufiero
