Pastor’s Corner

Dear Friends,
Every year the Second Sunday of Easter is celebrated as Divine Mercy Sunday. It comes at the end of the Octave of Easter and in a very real way, highlighting the great Easter joy which is the message of reconciliation. Easter reminds us that God's mercy triumphs over His own, rightful judgment on the world. St. John tells us that the Father sent His son not to condemn the world but that the world might be saved through Him. This is what the name 'Jesus' means - "God saves". Jesus was sent by God the Father on a rescue mission in order to save us from our sins.

St. Paul tells us that Christ died once and for all, the just one for the sake of the unjust. It was a death that took place in a particular time in history, in a particular place yet because Jesus is God and God is eternal, His death has an eternal effect - meaning that it is not confined to one time in history. Each time we come to Mass, this is what we experience - the death of the just one for the sake of the unjust.

One might think how it is possible to consider ourselves "unjust". I use the term not to indicate that we are evil but that we are indeed sinners. In our mistakes, wrongdoings, vices, weaknesses... we are "unjust" and in need of rescuing. The mission of Christ, His mission of salvation continues in and through the ministry of His priests and in the Sacraments of the Church. Christ seeks us out in order to save our souls. This is why we go to confession, receive Holy Communion, pray, practice virtue ... all of which helps focus our attention on Him, orients ourselves toward God and allows Him to come to us and fulfill His mission - to rescue and save.

This is Divine Mercy. Let's not let this mercy pass us by. Today is a day to get to confession.
