The opening prayer (called the Collect) of last weekend's Mass, the 2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time, reads:

Almighty and ever-living God, who govern all things, both in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the pleading of your people and bestow your peace on our times. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

This week we experienced the transition of one President to another. A new administration means new policies and changes. This wind of change will seem like a breath of fresh air for some and fear for others. Many think that the transition to a new administration will bring peace and unity. I assure you it will not and for the reasons stated above. Not everyone is on board. Not everyone agrees that this was the right choice for America. Now, please do not misunderstand, I am not taking sides, just pointing out a fact. Conflict still ensues.

The definition of peace is not the absence of conflict. What then makes for peace? Tranquility? The freedom of disturbance? Perhaps. I highlighted "bestow your peace on our times" because it seems like a most appropriate request from God during these most unsettling times in which we currently live. It is, in my mind and heart, exactly the right thing for which to pray. This peace is different than that of its strict definition. The peace for which we pray is a calmness of soul. It has more to do with our inner disposition, our faith, and the grace of God within us. This inner calmness comes with prayer.

It is certainly not wrong to pray for our country, for our new President, for others because the prayer of intercession is quite powerful. Yet, this prayer is meant to soften our hearts. It changes our own inner disposition in a movement from fear, anger and distress to calm; from arrogance and pride to humility.

Prayer may not fix our conflicts nor our country but it will certainly fix us and bring to us a deeper calmness of soul, an inner disposition of tranquility. It is this peace that is God's and, rightly, for which we pray.

Live-Streaming Masses: We will continue to live-stream the 10:30am Sunday Mass while under the 25% capacity restriction. The Mass will also be broadcast on the local FCAT channel 12.
|
In-person CCD begins this Sunday January 24, 2021 for grades 2-6; 9:30am-10:15am. Grades 7-8 and the Confirmation class meets Sunday February 7 6pm-7:30pm.

There are many Mass intentions open for the month of February & March. You can schedule a Mass by stopping by the office or calling.

Anyone who has candles used for prayer and would like them blessed, bring to Mass next weekend January 30 & 31, and give to Fr. Jonathan.

This past weekend the Take and Eat Ministry served spaghetti with meatballs and sauce, salad, and spice cake. The next meal is scheduled for Saturday February 20, 2021. If you know someone who would like a meal, please call the office.
