Pastor’s Corner

Dear Friends,
I want to take some time to continue this teaching on the Eucharist. Last week I wrote about the statistics of those who do not believe in Christ’s Real Presence. I spoke about the failures in leadership that have led to a steady decline in Mass attendance, which ultimately has contributed to the closing of parishes. The question then becomes, how do we bring it back? One solution is bringing back a more authentic worship and a deeper reverence. Hence the changes that I have implemented recently. Another solution is Eucharistic Adoration.

What is Eucharistic Adoration? I hope that you had the chance to watch the video that was attached to the newsletter last week that explains it. To ‘adore’ is to love and respect deeply. Anyone we feel this way about we will, without question, want to spend time with him or her. Adoration is simply spending time in the presence of the Eucharist, also called the Blessed Sacrament. It is when Our Lord, in the Eucharist is exposed on the altar outside of the offering of Mass. It is a prolonged experience of our worship at Mass. We get a glimpse of it when Father holds the Sacred Host up and says: Behold the Lamb of God...” This is precisely what Adoration is all about, spending time in God’s presence, beholding Him in His Eucharistic form. We look at Him and He looks at us.

Next we ask, what is the value, what are the benefits of spending time in Adoration? There are several benefits in our lives when we spend time in Adoration. Here are a few:
  • Rest - not sleeping but still a sense of calm invades us... the heart rate slows, blood pressure goes down and metabolism decreases. Even our breathing slows. The body responds to time in peaceful prayer before Our Lord.
  • Focus - while we may bring many things to prayer, our focus is on Him. Prayer actually helps us to focus more on being a better person. We become more compassionate and intentional in our thoughts and decision making.
  • Healing - this is a big one. Many of us have “baggage” that we carry... past hurts, grievances, anger, wounds left by others, etc. Time spent in Adoration, along with confession, allows the Divine Physician to heal our wounds.
On Wednesdays we have Eucharistic Adoration from 12pm-6pm. The church is open everyday I’m fact. As with any person we love and respect, we make time for them. This is your opportunity to make time for God outside of your busy lives. It is a time when you can retreat from the world , even for a moment, just to stay connected and thank God for the gift of life and love.
