Pastor’s Corner

Dear Friends,
Today marks the World Day of Prayer for Vocations - April 25, 2021. It is also known as Good Shepherd Sunday. In the Gospel of John, Jesus speaks of Himself as the Good Shepherd - one who cares for his flock, knows, protects, nourishes, and loves them. A good shepherd is not afraid to stand in the face of danger in order that the sheep learn to trust him and thus is willing to lay down his very life so that the sheep may live free of danger, and in peace.

There is a distinct correlation here between Jesus as the Good Shepherd and the priesthood He instituted. The priests of today are meant to be "good shepherds" themselves, modelling their lives after the likeness of Him who called them in the first place. This is not a glamorous position ... it is difficult. There is a great sense of disdain for the priesthood today than in any other time in history. In part, for what priests have done, for their own sins. Yet, at the same time, because the culture in which we live lends itself more towards a trust in the autonomous self, rather than in God. Many people leave it to themselves to navigate life and faith - if there is any present in their hearts. How distracting this is from hearing the voice of the Good Shepherd. The noise of the world - politics, the news, riots, violence ... where is God? Where is there peace? We who have faith must remember that Christ still speaks to us through the voices of His shepherds, whom we call our priests. He still calls young men to this special vocation, not just to His likeness but to be conformed to Him in their souls in order to carry out His ministry of salvation ... to know, care for, protect, nourish, to love and to lay down their lives for the faithful of today in order that The Good Shepherd may be present and bring peace to weary souls.

We must encourage men to be open to this call. We must not be afraid to lend our voices to those who we think might make good priests. We need them. We need priests. Therefore, today, of all days, pray for that young man you're thinking about, pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and for your priests - and maybe offer a word or two of encouragement because it may be God speaking through you to the heart of man He is calling.
